Well since I last posted a lot of things have happened.
Last week was crazy…both of us getting back into the work groove and settling back into being at home. It was a week of craziness. Then Thursday we got word that boy’s grandpa wasn’t doing so well and things just kind of went downhill from there. I went over to the care center Thursday night and sat with Mom and Grandma and Grandpa and sat with Grandpa while they were running around the center tending to other things. It was really hard as he was so sick, and I spent most of the time pestering one of the nurses at every little move he made…I suck at watching people be sick I guess. It was nice because I got to talk with him a little bit and just be with him. Then Friday we picked up the mom and headed home…errr to Waukee I mean. Friday we pulled into town, very excited because we got to have a family reunion of sorts, since boy sister and boy sister boyfriend were there. We walked into the house about 10:30 and my phone rings.
It was my dad. I was a little leary of the phone ringing that late and especially since it was my dad. Turns out my baby sister was in a pretty bad car wreck. They were going through an intersection on 100th street somewhere and someone turned right into my sisters part of the car. They had to use the jaws of life to get her out. I went to pick up my other sister and we headed to Methodist. She was discharged as we pulled up and the first thing she says, “I need a f**king cigarette.” Can you tell we are related? She was fine THANK GOD….how I am not quite sure. They told us if she hadn’t been wearing her seatbelt she would have gone right through the windshield. Scary, but like I said apart from some bruising she is fine.
Then Saturday we headed to Omaha for boy’s cousin’s wedding. It was really fun to spend time with boy family. And the wedding was really beautiful. They had it in a garden at the botanical center in Omaha…and then the reception was at boy’s uncles house. It was cool. There was a keg. And we had fun hanging out. Then we headed home to Waukee again.
Sunday morning we got the phone call that grandpa had passed away. So we headed back to the cities asap to get to grandma and say good bye to grandpa. We spent the rest of the day with Grandma, as well as Monday night….boy took the day off to help mom and grandma with stuff.
All and in all we are all pretty devastated, and knowing how I feel only getting to know him over eight years you can imagine how the rest feel. There is not another person on this earth like him, and I find it pretty amazing. He was the last of a dying breed of gentlemen, and from the moment I met him, as did everyone who did, you just felt his love. He was someone I considered a great Christian as well. Some of my fondest memories are sitting around dinner talking about Christ and the makings of a Christian life. It’s not very often that you come to love the family that you marry into so much, but I do, and even in this very sad time I feel so blessed to have them. Grandpa never acted like I was anything but part of the family from the time I met him. He always wanted to know what I was up to, what we were talking about at church, and made a special effort to know about me and my life. Even as he was in the hospital he asked about me, and what I was doing….even Thursday night as he would wake up he would ask me questions and just kept telling me how much he loved Greg and I, and how proud he was of us. Every meeting we had with him, we just were so excited to talk and be with him. I was completely in love with him. To hear his input in our lives, to get that special prayer, that crushing hug, and to just be in his presence. You don’t meet very many people in life, the ones that make you feel who you are, and make you feel like he looks at you like God probably does. He was probably the closest thing to heaven and God, on this earth. He was an amazing man, and will be GREATLY missed. And I think if your granddaughter-in-law says that about you….you’re pretty high calibur human being.
Anyway…now that I am bawling. We’ll head to Iowa Saturday, for the services on Sunday and Monday. If you think of it…say a prayer for all of us. We sure would appreciate it.
